Frequently Asked Questions About Citizenship and Immigration Regularization in Brazil

Get answers about the main immigration law procedures in Brazil

How long does it take for a foreigner to obtain Brazilian citizenship?

The time frame varies according to the category. Ordinary naturalization requires at least 4 years of residence in Brazil (article 65 of the Migration Law — Law No. 13,445/2017). For spouses or partners of Brazilian citizens, the period is reduced to 1 year. In cases of relevant contribution to the country, it may be granted at any time. The procedure is administrative and is processed by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security.

What documents are required to apply for Brazilian naturalization?

In general, the required documents include: valid passport, National Migratory Registration Card (CRNM), proof of legal residence for the required period, criminal background certificates from the country of origin and Brazil, proof of means of subsistence and the application form. The exact list varies according to the naturalization category — consult a specialized lawyer to verify the requirements for your case.

What is Residence Authorization and how can I apply for it?

Residence Authorization is the document issued by the Ministry of Justice and Public Security that allows a foreigner to legally reside in Brazil. It may be temporary or granted for an indefinite period. It is based on ties such as marriage to a Brazilian citizen, formal employment, family reunification, investment or refuge. The request is filed with the Federal Police.

Can I regularize my immigration status in Brazil even if I am currently irregular?

Yes, in many cases it is possible. Brazilian Migration Law (Law No. 13,445/2017) provides mechanisms for the regularization of immigrants in irregular status, especially when there are ties to Brazil such as Brazilian children, marriage to a Brazilian citizen or proven time of residence. Each case is analyzed individually — specialized legal guidance is essential.

How does the visa or residence process based on marriage to a Brazilian citizen work?

A foreigner married to a Brazilian citizen may apply for Residence Authorization based on the marital relationship. After it is granted, the reduced 1-year period of legal residence begins for naturalization purposes. A marriage certificate, personal documents from both spouses and proof of shared life are required.

What is the difference between temporary and permanent residence in Brazil?

Temporary residence is granted for a fixed period (usually 2 years, renewable) and is tied to a specific purpose, such as work, study or family ties. Residence for an indefinite period is granted in specific situations provided for by the Migration Law, such as to the spouse of a Brazilian citizen, to a migrant with Brazilian children or to those who have completed the temporary residence period and meet the legal requirements.

What is the CRNM (National Migratory Registration Card)?

The CRNM is the identification document for foreign residents in Brazil, issued by the Federal Police. It replaced the former Foreign Identity Card (CIE) and is required to open bank accounts, obtain a CPF, access public services and prove regular immigration status.

Is the service in person or can it be done online?

The service is 100% online, conducted by video call. We assist foreigners in any country who wish to start citizenship, regularization or visa procedures for Brazil, as well as Brazilians living abroad. All communication and document organization can be handled remotely, safely and efficiently.
